The month of January is saturated with awards shows, from the Golden Globes to the Screen Actors Guild Awards to this evening’s Grammy Awards. Though many viewers tune into the televised broadcasts to see who wins, a great number of viewers also watch to see who’s wearing what.
The main focus tends to be on the designer gowns, but accessory trends are also prevalent on the red carpet. So far this year, there have been some trends that have critics screaming “yay” while others are best left forgotten.
Here’s a roundup of spotted trends and how to adapt them for everyday wear.
Jewels on Dresses
Instead of only seeing sparkles in the forms of necklaces and bracelets, celebrities wore jewels attached to their dresses.
To wear this look on a daily basis, it’s easy to attach a brooch to a dress or a cardigan. Generally, dresses made of thicker or sturdier fabrics work the best. A dress in a fabric that is too gauzy or flimsy may not have enough weight to hold the pin and there is a risk of the fabric tearing.
If a pin looks “too glitzy” for day, pairing it with a dressed-down outfit such as jeans and a shirt is a stylish balance. Brooches against denim (this can also work on a jean jacket) achieve the chic/casual look.
Clutches
It’s rare to see celebrities carrying purses on the red carpet, but a bevy of women were spotted holding a clutch.
Clutches have been popular for decades, generally as a party or nighttime purse. But an increasing amount of designers are creating clutches that look appropriate for daytime. If a clutch is too small to fit everything one needs during the day, a solution is to pack a larger tote to keep in the office or car, and then use a clutch for small outings like lunch hour.
Bold Shoes
Fashion critics noticed some odd shoe choices this year, such as black heels with a white dress or bright colored shoes that didn’t match the dress. Their words to the wearers were not kind.
It’s probably best to stick to a slightly more traditional shoe choice when in a fancy situation. However, bright shoe colors -- such as lime green or royal blue -- can jazz up an everyday look, particularly when the rest of the outfit is neutral or monochromatic.
